Davies signs new contract!

Oldham and Wales forward, Craig Davies, has signed
a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2010.

The 22-year-old Welsh international's existing contract
was due to expire at the end of the season.

After signing from Italian side Verona in the summer of
2007 he has scored 15 goals for the League One side.

"It was important the club protected their interests in a
proven goalscorer," chief executive Alan Hardy told the club's
website.

Davies, who played for Oxford United before moving to Italy,
also had a loan spell at Wolves before joining Oldham.

Despite having been a first-team regular for most of the
season, he missed the back-end of last season with a
hamstring tear.

"We hope Craig now goes on to have an extremely
successful season," Hardy added.

United Beat Pompey to Claim Shield in Shoot-out

Man Utd (p) 0-0 Portsmouth

Manchester United needed a penalty shoot-out to
capture the Community Shield despite producing a
dominant display against Portsmouth at Wembley.

Pompey failed to score three of their four spot-kicks
to hand victory to Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

United had completely controlled the game but
wasted a series of chances.

Darren Fletcher somehow failed to turn in Nani's
cross and had a lob turned on to the bar by David
James, who also denied Carlos Tevez with a superb stop.

Cooke Grabs Gold, whils archers unlucky

Nicole Cooke claimed Britain's first gold medal of the
Beijing Olympics in a thrilling women's cycling road race.

The Welsh rider timed her finish to perfection, powering
off the front and away from Emma Johansson and Tatiana
Guderzo in the sprint to the line.

Cooke, 25, was in a group of five that pulled away from
the peloton in the final stretch to the finish.

She clocked a time of three hours, 32 minutes and 24
seconds and is Britain's first Olympic medallist in this event.

"We did it, it was perfect. It's a dream come true," said
Cooke, who became the first Welsh person to win Olympic
gold for 36 years.

Having finished a disappointing fifth at the Athens Olympics
in 2004, her delight as she crossed the line first was obvious
as she leapt of her bike and whooped with delight, racing to
hug her team-mates.

"I came over the line and there was so much - I was just so
happy and there were so many emotions that were coming
out all at once. I made so much noise because I guess that's
just the person I am.

"I want to thank all the people who have been there from the
start. I have worked so hard, I am so happy.

"I don't think it has sunk in yet. I still feel like the normal
Nicole from before the race. But it's just so exciting."

However, Britain's women archers weren't so lucky,
Great Britain's women archers having to settle for
fourth place in the team event after losing out to
France in the bronze medal play-off.

The team of Alison Williamson, Naomi Folkard and
Charlotte Burgess narrowly lost 203-201 to the French trio.

France claimed eight points on the final arrow for a two-point win.

The competition was delayed because of thunderstorms
(we should have played on, we're used to that kind of
weather!!), but the interruption did not seem to hinder
France as they claimed their first medal in the event.

Britain's women came to Beijing ranked second in the
world, behind eventual gold medallists Korea, but qualified
for the last four with the lowest score of the semi-finalists.

Team GB were comfortably beaten 208-202 in the semi-finals
by China, who went on to win silver, and again failed to
impose themselves in the play-offs.

Wolverhampton-born Williamson, who was appearing in her
fifth Olympics, broke down in tears after the defeat to France,
claiming she had let her team-mates down.

"I am really disappointed," said Williamson, who won individual
bronze in Athens four years ago.

"I feel, basically, that I let the other two down, that I should
have pulled my weight more and I didn't.

"It's really frustrating and disappointing when you are that
close to a medal you are almost touching it. Four years is a
long time to wait to try again."

Britain's women had expected to tackle conditions of heat
and humidity in Beijing, but instead found themselves
struggling to keep warm during the 15-minute delay in play.

Man U expect long-term stay for Ronnie

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes
Cristiano Ronaldo would prefer to extend his stay
at the club rather than join Real Madrid.

After a summer saga in which the 23-year-old was
continually linked with the Spanish giants, Ronaldo
has publicly committed himself to United.

"Real know they are dealing with a different animal
now," said Ferguson.

"As he gets older, he'll appreciate being here more.
The longer players stay, they don't want to leave."

Ronaldo, who is currently sidelined through injury,
has a contract running until 2012 at Old Trafford
but Ferguson said he would like to extend the deal.

"Cristiano will now settle down and enjoy his career
here," said Ferguson.

"He has four years left on his contract and hopefully,
at some point, we would like to extend it.
That's where we are.

"I can't deny it was an important issue to keep him here.
There are very few players who have left me against my
will and it is unusual for anybody to want to leave United.

"I think Cristiano realises that. We had a good meeting
in Portugal that clarified a lot of things.

"It was good and I was pleased with it and that's why I felt
everything was going to be all right."
